On the reverse of this 2011 Judo Fifty Pence piece is Cornell's design of two judo athletes with one throwing the other. He decided to depict the move that injured his shoulder and caused him to have to stop competing. Cornell was familiar with the sport of judo having competed when he was younger, and so chose this sport as the subject of his design. David Cornell, a painter and sculptor, submitted the Judo design. The Royal Mint hosted a competition for the public to submit their designs for the commemorative collection, and out of 30,000 submissions 29 were selected.
